Folks from all walks of life pitched in to pick up over 5,000 pounds of trash, including two dirt bikes, several mattresses and a multitude of car parts.
One of largest Earth Day weekend events in lower Westchester area, Cleanup participants included the Yonkers Millennium Lions Club, Sarah Lawrence College, Yonkers Girls Scout Troop 2039, LL Bean, Hazen and Sawyer, Suburbia Roller Derby, and students from Yonkers, Gorton, Lincoln, and Saunders high schools. The cleanup encompassed nine sites along the Saw Mill River, including the following sites in Yonkers: Hearst Street, Odell and Executive Blvd., Walsh Road/War Memorial Field, and Van der Donck Park.
At Van der Donck Park, Dr. Gareth Hougham of Hudson Valley Arts & Science hauled one of two dirt bikes out of the river.
Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Sophie Niesciur organized this year’s Cleanup.
Local businesses stepped up to make this event possible, including lead sponsors The Danforth at Rivertowns Square, Rivertowns Square’s new owners, Regency Center, and Ginsburg Development, owner of The Lofts on Saw Mill River and River Tides in Yonkers, among others.
Other Yonkers businesses provided vital support for the Cleanup, included Ridgewood Savings Bank, Yonkers Tennis Center, PS & Engineering, Sound Associates and The Westchester Bank.
